Why Udyam registration is worth having
Udyam is the government's registration for micro, small and medium enterprises, and it replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system. It costs very little and takes almost no time, yet it is the single document that makes a small business eligible for a long list of central and state benefits. Classification depends on your investment in plant and machinery and your annual turnover — micro up to ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore respectively, small up to ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore, medium up to ₹50 crore and ₹250 crore.
- Collateral-free loans. The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust scheme lets banks lend to registered MSMEs without security, which is often the difference between getting funded and not.
- Cheaper borrowing. Most banks offer registered MSMEs a lower rate than an unregistered business, frequently one to one and a half percent below.
- Protection against late payment. Buyers are legally obliged to settle an MSME invoice within forty-five days, with compound interest payable if they don't.
- Government tender preference. A share of public procurement is reserved for MSMEs, and registered firms are exempt from earnest money deposits.
- Subsidy on IP filings. Patent and trademark fees are reimbursed in part for registered MSMEs, which reduces the cost of protecting your brand.
- State-level concessions. Many states offer electricity tariff rebates, stamp duty exemption and capital subsidy to MSME-registered units.
Documents you'll need
Udyam is a self-declaration system linked to your Aadhaar and PAN, so the paperwork is minimal. In most cases this is genuinely all we need.
- Aadhaar card of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised director.
- PAN card of the business entity.
- Business address and bank account details.
- Investment and turnover figures for the previous financial year, which are self-declared.
- GSTIN, if your business is already GST registered.

Already have an Udyog Aadhaar?
The old Udyog Aadhaar memorandum is no longer valid and had to be migrated to Udyam. If you registered before July 2020 and never migrated, your benefits have lapsed. We can re-register you under Udyam at the same ₹1,499 — just mention it when you call.
Frequently asked
Does Udyam registration expire?
No. Once issued, the registration number is permanent and there is no renewal fee. Your classification is, however, updated automatically each year based on the ITR and GST data linked to your PAN.
Can a trader register under MSME?
Yes. Retail and wholesale traders were brought within the Udyam framework in 2021, though they are eligible for priority sector lending benefits rather than the full set of manufacturing incentives.
Is GST registration required first?
Only if your business is otherwise liable to register under GST law. If your turnover is below the GST threshold you can obtain Udyam registration using PAN and Aadhaar alone.
Can I register more than one business?
One Udyam registration covers all activities of a single entity, including manufacturing and service lines, which should be listed together. Separate legal entities each need their own registration.
