What GST registration gives you
Goods and Services Tax registration issues you a fifteen-digit GSTIN, which is the number every compliant business in India uses to collect tax, claim credit and trade across state lines. Registration is compulsory once annual turnover crosses ₹20 lakh for services or ₹40 lakh for goods — and in several special category states the threshold is half of that. If you sell through Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho or any other marketplace, registration is required from your very first sale regardless of turnover.
- Legal authority to charge GST. Without a GSTIN you cannot lawfully collect tax from your customers or issue a tax invoice.
- Input tax credit on purchases. Recover the GST you pay to suppliers instead of absorbing it as a cost, which directly improves your margin.
- Required for e-commerce. Every major marketplace demands a GSTIN before activating your seller account.
- Credibility with larger clients. Corporate buyers and government departments generally will not onboard an unregistered vendor.
- Interstate trade becomes possible. Supplying goods across state borders legally requires registration.
- Easier access to credit. Banks and NBFCs treat GST returns as reliable evidence of turnover when assessing a loan.
Documents you'll need
The exact list varies slightly by business structure. Your assigned CA confirms your list on the first call, so nothing is collected unnecessarily.
- PAN card of the business, or of the proprietor for a sole proprietorship.
- Aadhaar card of the proprietor, partners or directors.
- Passport-size photograph of the authorised signatory.
- Proof of business address — a recent electricity bill, or a rent agreement together with the owner's no-objection certificate.
- Bank proof — a cancelled cheque or the first page of your bank statement.
- Certificate of incorporation for companies and LLPs.
- Digital signature certificate for companies and LLPs, which we can arrange if you don't have one.
How the process runs
1
Share your detailsSubmit the enquiry form or message us on WhatsApp. A Chartered Accountant calls you back, usually within thirty minutes during working hours.
2
Upload documentsYou send the document list through a secure link. We check every file before anything is filed, because a rejected application is what causes most delays.
3
We file on the GST portalYour CA submits the application, completes Aadhaar authentication and responds to any query the department raises on your behalf.
4
GSTIN issuedYour registration certificate arrives by email, normally within one to two working days. We then brief you on your first return and its due date.
A note on composition scheme
If your turnover is under ₹1.5 crore and you sell within one state, the composition scheme lets you pay a flat lower rate with quarterly rather than monthly returns — but you cannot claim input credit. We'll tell you honestly which option leaves you better off before you commit.
Frequently asked
Is GST registration mandatory for my business?
It becomes mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services, with lower thresholds in special category states. It applies from the first rupee if you sell on an e-commerce marketplace, supply goods interstate, or are liable under reverse charge. Many businesses also register voluntarily to claim input credit.
What happens if I register and have no sales?
You must still file nil returns for every period. Missing them attracts a late fee per day, so if you register voluntarily make sure you keep filing. Our Books & GST Filing service covers this for ₹3,499.
Do I need a commercial address?
No. A residential address is perfectly acceptable for GST registration provided you can supply a utility bill, and a no-objection certificate from the owner if the property is rented or in a family member's name.
Can one PAN have multiple GST registrations?
Yes. GST is state-specific, so if you operate from premises in more than one state you need a separate registration in each. Separate registrations for distinct business verticals within a state are also permitted.
How long does the GSTIN stay valid?
For a regular taxpayer the registration has no expiry and continues until you surrender it or it is cancelled. Casual and non-resident taxable persons receive registrations limited to ninety days.
★★★★★
"I was anxious about GST because of all the requirements I'd read about. Their CA walked me through everything on a single call and my GSTIN came through in two days. Far smoother than I expected, and the price was exactly what was quoted."
